السلام عليكم
Yesterday was the night of Isra'a Mikraj & today (27hb Rejab) is known to be the day of Isra'a Mikraj whereby Allah SWT Most Mighty & Most Exalted gave the commandment to our beloved Prophet Muhammad S.A.W regarding the 5 prayers. I intend to share my knowledge about Isra'a Wal Mikraj now (after listening to the lectures by Yasir Qadhi) so that everyone would be able to understand the significance & the miracles of Allah SWT and so that we can all learn to love Allah SWT and our Prophet Muhammad S.A.W even deeper and stronger(:
Isra'a & Mikraj were actually 2 incidents that occured but since they occured back-to-back in the same night, hence people tend to discuss and associate them together. The first incident- Al-Isra'a, which means the night journey, happens when the Prophet pbuh travelled on a night journey from Mecca to Jerusalem. At the same time, the second journey: Al-Mikraj, which means to take someone up, occurred from Jerusalem to the heavens. Isra'a Mikraj occurred 1 year before our beloved Prophet pbuh emigrated to Madinah and happened towards the end of the Mecca era.
This incident began in the Ka'abah when Nabi Muhammad S.A.W was sleeping inside the Ka'abah and Jibril A.S woke the Prophet S.A.W up and told him to follow Jibril. After that, Jibril A.S opened out Prophet pbuh chest, took his heart out and washed it with zam-zam water in a golden bowl. This was done so as to prepare Nabi Muhammad S.A.W for the night journey that no human being has ever been to hence, there is a need to increase his iman, courage, strength. Following that, Jibril A.S told Prophet Muhammad S.A.W to ride the Buraq and according to our Prophet pbuh, the Buraq was a white animal- larger than a donkey but smaller than a mule. Whenever the Buraq moves, it would put its foot at the end of the horizon and the next step at the end of the end of another horizon and so on and forth. Thus, each step goes as far as the eyes can see in a short span.
Since the Buraq could move at great speed (huge steps), our Prophet arrived at Jerusalem in a few seconds and prayed 2 raka'ats at Masjidil Al Aqsa (Masjidil Al Aqsa is the holy mosque as all the other prophets venerated it). When Nabi Muhammad S.A.W was praying and after he finished praying, he saw all the other prophets behind him, standing in 1 line and praying behind him. This is to show the finality of our beloved Prophet Muhammad S.A.W; that he was the seal to all Prophets and also to show that he is superior- he would be the imam/ the leader of all the children of Adam A.S during the Day of Ressurection. Once our beloved Prophet finished praying, Jibril came to him with 2 containers- one filled with milk and the other with wine. Now, at that time, wine was not prohibited but our prophet pbuh chose the milk and jibril claimed that he had made the right choice thus showing how pure our Prophet S.A.W is. Soon, Jibril A.S took our prophet pbuh for mikraj using the instument 'mikraj' to transfer people up to the highest heavens.
*It must be noted that 'heavens' in this case, does not refer to paradise/Jannah. Rather, it refers to the skies. Jannah only occurs at the highest heaven/ the 7th heaven (final sky).
In total, there are 7 heavens and our solar systems, skies and stars only consists of the 1st heaven. Everytime when Jibril and our Prophet pbuh arrived at a heaven, Jibril would knock on a door and a gatekeeper would be guarding the door and allowed them in with Allah's SWT permission. Upon the arrival to a certain heaven, both of them would be greeted by the best prophets so as to welcome Nabi Muhammad SAW.
Prophets:
1st heaven: Nabi Adam A.S
2nd heaven: Nabi Isa & Nabi Yahya A.S (cousins)
3rd heaven: Nabi Yusuf A.S (According to our Prophet pbuh, when he saw Nabi Yusuf, he claimed that it was as if Allah SWT gave half of the beauty of this world to Nabi Yusuf A.S)
4th heaven: Nabi Idris A.S
5th heaven: Nabi Harun A.S
6th heaven: Nabi Musa A.S
7th heaven: Nabi Ibrahim A.S
Then, our beloved Prophet pbuh, moved higher and higher until he came upon 2 magnificent things:
1) The tree of Sidratul Muntaha:
It is the farthest tree & most biggest as it starts from the 6th heaven up till the 7th. Our Prophet claimed that its leaves are like elephant ears, its fruits are like huge Yemen jugs and the tree was filled with colours- colours that we don't know as it is beyond our knowledge. From the roots of the tree, 4 rivers flow from it.
2) Al-Baitul Makmur
This is the Ka'abah for the Malaikats/angels and is located at the 7th heaven. It exists directly above the Ka'abah on Earth and everyday, 70 000 new malaikats would visit and pray there.
Nabi Muhammad S.A.W went further up until he herad the writings of Allah's pen- Wal Qalam. This pen is the pen in which Allah creates which writes down everything that is currently happening, had happened and would happen in the future. After that, our Prophet S.A.W rose to a level that no created being has ever been to. Even Jibril A.S had to stop and could not continue. Our Prophet Muhammad SAW had rose to a level where there is the presence of Allah SWT. Here, Allah talks to our Prophet directly without any intemediary and obligated the Muslims to pray 50 times a day.
